It’s a tradition for Hong Kong Chinese to meet family and friends at a Chinese restaurant for dim sum over the weekends. While most Chinese restaurants are not very vegetarian- or vegan-friendly when it comes to that, there are definitely plenty of options around town.
One of my favorite Cantonese dim sum dishes is called Char Siu Bao 叉燒包, which is essentially buns filled with barbecue flavored pork (not the same as American barbecue sauce). Sometimes it’s called BBQ buns. They are usually served steamed in a bamboo steamer, but are sometimes baked. This photo shows a vegan version of the Char Siu Bao in Vegelink Vegetarian Restaurant at Foo Yet Kai Commercial Centre, 56 Java Road in North Point. They taste almost identical as the original, meat version…but it’s completely meat-free, dairy-free and preservatives-free. It’s made with non-GMO soy protein. The restaurant has a small but well-stocked grocery store within the premise. Vegelink imports them from Malaysia and package them under their own brand. You will be able to find them in a 9-pack product in the freezer section, with the regular and wheat versions.
Give vegan dim sum a go. You won’t know it’s vegan if you are not told.

While you are in North Point on Sat, you should go there to get some! It’s very close-by.
looks yummy! i could have 10 of those!
