U.S. flag retirement ceremony - How to retire a flag

According to the Flag Code of Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1:

  1. The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

  2.  The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

If you have a flag that is unserviceable, then the following piece of information will be very useful to you.

The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks are hosting their annual American Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Elks Lodge in Alamogordo on 10 November 2007 at 2:00 pm.  During the ceremony, worn-out flags that are no longer serviceable will be disposed of.  This authorized Flag Retirement ceremony is to retire these symbols of the United States with honor and respect.

If anyone has a worn-out flag they wish to dispose of, please contact the Steel Talons Honor Guard at (575) 572-2077.  You may drop the flags off at the Heritage Center behind the Airpark on Holloman Air Force Base, but please call first to ensure that the Honor Guard is in.  Flags may also be dropped off in the Headquarters building at the Services Squadron front office.

Any flags dropped off after this weekend will be properly stored until next year’s ceremony.
