Recently, the school district in Alamogordo, New Mexico, is trying to implement a school uniform or standardized dress policy. Personally, I’m all for it. I came from an Asian culture that everybody wears school uniform – it doesn’t matter whether you are from private school or public school. At least I didn’t have to worry about what to wear to school every day. It saved me a whole lot of time.
My reservation over their proposal is why and how they want to implement this policy. Setting a school uniform policy is not a solution or shortcut to the enforcement of the existing dress code policy. I have always wondered why the high school girls can show cleavage and that they have been allowed to wear the same type of clothing day after day. After working with so many organizations throughout my career (yes, job-hopping is quite a norm in Asia), I believe that you can have all the policies you want, but ultimately it’s all about whether they are enforced or not.
There have been quite some debates over this issue, and I wrote a letter and sent it to our local newspaper, Alamogordo Daily News. Despite of what some people said about our newspaper, the editors were pretty receptive to the voices from the community. Yes, it may have some printing mistakes once in a while, but we are all human. My letter was edited, but the gist is still there.
